The Eastern Gauteng Wrestling Association pinned more than just their hopes at the SA Youth, Cadet, Junior and Senior Championships recently, securing no less than 48 medals over the three-day competition.
Held at Wembley Stadium in Johannesburg between October 6 and 8, the event attracted around 800 wrestlers from around the country, as well as a strong invitational team from Namibia.
Eastern Gauteng’s U/8 and U/11 wrestlers were in among the medals, winning the floating trophy for overall victory in their respective categories, despite strong opposition from Northern Gauteng.
Brakpan Wrestling Club (BWC) featured prominently at the event – member and Laerskool PAM Brink pupil Fernando Booysen claiming two national titles in the U/9 age group, with Nigel’s Xain Schoeman adding to his teams’ noteworthy success.
The club managed 11 medals in total; including four gold, two silver and five bronze; against some of the best competition in the country.

Easterns’ senior wrestlers also proved their mettle, bringing home the senior floating trophy for victory in this year’s competition.
